You may be able to activate the iPhone without AT&T

Joel and I have Apple iPhones under evaluation, and I am leaning towards returning mine in the 14-day trial period. One major reason is that the iPhone is only available on AT&T, and I am locked into T-Mobile for another year.

It seems you may be able to activate an iPhone without AT&T, but you will have to use some tools that your average Joe most likely will not be able to accomplish. that is a hack, and you risk bricking your iPhone, so take plenty of caution before trying to do that.

However, all that does is allow you to activate the iPhone without AT&T and use it as a WiFi-enabled iPod. It will still be SIM locked, so you can’t use it as a phone with other providers. Hackers are working on SIM unlocking the device, and whether that happens, thereupon I will consider the iPhone to use with T-Mobile.
