Viking Modular has just released a new Solid State Drive (SSD) which comes in a DIMM memory form factor – offering a new approach to throw in SSD capability into a computer without being bound by the 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch form factor. Dubbed SATADIMM , this is basically storage on a memory module and resembles system RAM, cozying up to DDR3 memory slots on the motherboard albeit being connected to an onboard SATA interface. At its size, it will require just a fraction of the space needed to house a more familiar 2.5-inch drive solution, and is able to deliver sustained read/write speeds of 260MB/s and sequential and random performance of 30,000 I/O operations per second. Not only does it play nice with main operating systems out there, it will also offer built-in AES-128 encryption, SSD-specific SMART command support and TRIM support. You can’t purchase it off the shelf unless you’re a system manufacturer or designer, where the SATADIMM will come in 50GB, 100GB or 200GB capacities.
