Google has a secret laboratory, unknown even to most of the company’s employees, where it develops projects that sound like something taken from a sci-fi movie, the New York Times reports. At the lab, located somewhere in the Bay Area, Google’s brightest engineers are working on some hundred projects, including smart refrigerators and dinner plates, robots that fetch the groceries and elevators that can take you to outer space. An unnamed Google engineer says that the lab is run mysteriously, in two different office buildings — one for logistics and the other for robotics projects. The scientists working in the lab include hires from Microsoft, Nokia, Stanford, M.I.T., Carnegie Mellon and New York University. Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin is reportedly “deeply involved” with the project, and he and co-founder Larry Page have come up with a list of ideas for the lab. It is reportedly headed by robotics and artificial intelligence expert Sebastian Thrun from Stanford, best known for his work on the world’s first driverless car . Andrew Ng, a Stanford professor and an esteemed A.I. expert, also works at the lab. A Google spokeswoman would not confirm the existence of the lab, but she did say that Google likes to invest in speculative projects. Google’s 20% rule, which lets engineers spend one-fifth of their work time on personal projects, is one example of that, but a secret lab takes this idea a step further and makes you wonder which of these technologies will graduate to be full-fledged Google projects.
Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet began shipping on Monday, a day earlier than projected. The company announced the introduction of the device on Sept. 28 at a price of $199, making it one of the most affordable tablets on the U.S. market. The Kindle Fire provides access to 100,000 movies and TV shows, which are available to stream or download, purchase or rent. Some 400 magazines will also be available for Kindle Fire, many of them through free trials. With Black Friday less than two weeks away, the release’s timing is optimized for the holiday season. For shoppers, Kindle Fire represents a much cheaper alternative to Apple’s iPad, which starts at $499. However, it remains to be seen whether consumers will accept some trade-offs for the cost savings like a smaller screen, “shockingly small text” and clunky access to email that Mashable editor in chief Lance Ulanoff discovered when he reviewed the device. Since most Android devices are in the same price range as the iPad (the “Family Edition” Motorola Xoom is a notable exception at $379), Amazon may face its toughest competition from Barnes & Noble, whose Nook Tablet retails for $249 — just $50 more than the Kindle Fire.
A number of new Windows Phone devices — including the excellent Focus Flash — launched this week and Microsoft decided to celebrate with a big media blitz in New York City. Microsoft built a six-story Windows Phone with truly “live” Live tiles in the middle of Midtown Manhattan. As you can see from this video mashup, there was a lot going on. In the last few months, Microsoft has ramped up efforts to better promote its mobile platform, features and devices. When Windows Phone 7 launched last year, almost everything about the platform — including the messaging — seemed unfinished. Windows Phone had a lot of potential, it just didn’t seem ready. A year later, things are different. Not only does Microsoft have a strong partnership with Nokia — whose Lumia 800 is truly lustworthy — it also has a stronger lineup of devices from other manufacturers aimed at a variety of markets and price points. Windows Phone 7.5 Mango feels like a very finished product. Multi-tasking works well, copy and paste is included and the OS natively integrates with social accounts from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Developers are starting to notice too, with more major apps and services finding their way to Windows Phone 7. Microsoft’s biggest obstacle now is one of awareness. That’s why we hope Microsoft follows up its in-person media blitzes with salient, well-messaged advertising across media channels. We also hope the company and its device partners continue to work with the wireless carriers to educate sales staff about the phone and its features.
Since the dawn of the X-ray, teenage boys have dreamed of glasses that would see through clothing. Now, they have an app: MoosejawXRAY Outerwear retailer Moosejaw has released an augmented reality app for iPhone , iPad and Android devices that lets users see through the clothing featured in its winter catalog. Male and female models are shown stripped down to their under-layers when the app is positioned over catalog pages, as shown in the video above. Of the many augmented reality apps we’ve seen to date, this is arguably the most inventive. It’s an effective way to bolster buzz and engagement with a relatively unknown catalog, but we wonder if it rather, ah, distracts from the clothes themselves. Granted, it’s an ad (so take it with a grain of salt!), but it shows design details that were not disclosed before. This video shows how the phone was structurally designed to be more compact, and yet very rigid. It’s a 1mn video that’s worth checking out if you like thin smartphones.
The name of a new Nokia phone has surfaced from the stats of an app called “I’m a WP7!” which has been used to discover certain Windows Phones in the past. But other than the name of the phone “Nokia Champagne” and its operating system, we don’t have a whole lot of details to work with. It could be the Nokia Lumia rebranded for another country or it could be a brand new device. However, because the phone is running on Windows Phone version 7.10.8711 which makes it a Tango device (since Tango builds are said to start at 8200 and higher). And since it is running on Windows Phone Tango, there have been speculations about the phone being the Lumia 800 with LTE support (Tango is supposed to be the first version of WP that supports LTE connectivity). Well until Nokia officially announces the phone, or more details leak, you’d best not hold your breath waiting for this device, since there’s no way to confirm if it’s even going to be released – at least not just yet. What do you think the Nokia Champagne is going to be? Nokia Champagne calls for celebration , By Ubergizmo . Top Stories : iPhone 4S Review , Epic 4G Touch Review ,
