Could this bit of news be a redeeming feature for the ailing handset manufacturer from Finland? You decide – we are talking about Nokia Maps which traditionally was available only on Nokia devices, but has since expanded to see action on iOS and Android platforms. Well, that makes perfect sense since both iOS and Android-powered devices have long since surpassed Nokia’s market share where smartphones are concerned. With the latest version of Nokia Maps for iOS and Android, it seems that offline maps are now supported in addition to public transport directions. Apart from that, POI information (Points Of Interest) has also been thrown into the mix, which is a positive development since this browser-based Nokia maps is not the full integrated application that you find on Symbian-powered handsets as well as the Nokia N9 which runs on the MeeGo operating system. A moment of silence for those who succumbed to the earthquake in Turkey – and at press time, the death toll stands at 200 plus and will most definitely rise in the coming days if efforts to rescue trapped people under all the rubble and carnage are not expedited. Nice to know that Internet search giant Google has just launched their Person Finder service in Turkish so that those living in the eastern cities of Turkey will at least have a tool to locate and track down their friends and loved ones. Basically, Google Person Finder enables a user to post information concerning victims, or to follow up on their relatives and friends who are currently residing at sites affected by the earthquake. TomTom and Ford cozy up for semi-integrated navigation in Europe

Ford has teamed up with TomTom in order to offer semi-integrated navigation not in the US, but in Europe instead. From today onwards, TomTom will be integrating its GO LIVE 1000 and GO LIVE 1005 models using a specifically designed cradle for Ford models in Europe. Bear in mind that this is not available in the UK and Ireland at the moment, but who knows what might happen down the road? It seems that this solution is said to be able to deliver a clean semi-integrated solution, where all the wires won’t make themselves look out of place since they’re tucked away into the dashboard.
