The “lucky” football club that will be getting their heads shaved will be South-East London’s Bromley FC, who hired the hair stylist favored by both Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand to give them their first XI QR hair cuts. We’re not sure what these QR codes are meant to advertise or do, since it seems highly unlikely that regular fans or spectators will get close enough to grab a photo of the QR codes with their mobile phones, which seems to suggest that this is more form rather than functionality. However given that there will be plenty of sports photographers with ultra zoom lenses, we don’t see why they couldn’t start commercializing these QR codes through the sports section in the newspaper. After all, a raincoat is supposed to keep you dry from the pitter patter of rainfall, no? I guess the entire form factor of it (not to mention the classic bright yellow color) makes sense, where this new project that involves lining the outhouses of the developing world with such a “raincoat” might end up saving millions of lives. It looks like Rakuten wants to take a stab at the eBook business with its latest acquisition. Rakuten has been on a shopping spree recently, with the purchase of multiple companies such as PriceMinister (a French e-commerce company), Tradoria (a German online shopping mall), Ikeda (a Brazillian e-commerce company), Buy.com and Play.com (online retailers). With the addition of Kobo to its arsenal, it looks like Rakuten has the resources it needs to turn into a small Amazon, though the company didn’t mention if it had any plans to do so. Kobo will remain in its headquarters, keep its management team and employees, stay based in Toronto, and continue operating as usual – but we wouldn’t be surprised if it expands to other parts of the world in the future. The folks over at the European Space Agency held a simulated mission to Mars called Mars500, where six astronauts were placed inside a space shuttle and had their daily lives recorded on video. While certain aspect of Mars couldn’t be simulated i.e. low-gravity conditions, in my opinion they did a pretty good job of recreating what life would be like on a space mission to the red planet.
