Submerge: subtitles and more for your Apple TV, iPod, iPhone

iPod users who would want to have subtitles added to their film files should take a look at that great find: Submerge. Bitfield’s Submerge lets iPod, iPhone and Apple TV users merge a separate subtitle file (either .srt or .sub file types) with a film file that will still be playable on an iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV.

Here’s the list of features that makes Submerge a sweet package:

  • Make subtitled movies that are playable on your iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, in iTunes or in Front Row.
  • Add subtitles to nearly any visual format like mov, avi, mp4 etc.
  • Supports the major subtitle file formats like SubRip (.srt), SubViewer 1 & 2 (.sub) and MicroDVD. More about subtitle formats…
  • Support for the Elgato Turbo.264 hardware encoder for faster compression.
  • Force aspect ratio to 16:9 or 4:3 to use your monitor space more efficiently.
  • Watch subtitled movies in fullscreen without leaving the application.
  • Merge multiple movies together using simple
    copy and paste.
  • Localized in English, Italian (by Vella Bruno, www.pyxart.it/macsw), French (by Ronald Leroux), Finnish (by Arto Vartiainen), Spanish (by Clapp!, http://clappin.net), Dutch (by Lex van der Helm) and Swedish.

The program is fairly easy to use: just invent certain you have the needed .srt or .sub files handy, tweak the settings in the Settings Drawer (even change the fonts), and you’ll be ready to go.

Submerge can additionally do more than add subtitles, however: it can additionally adjust the aspect ratio of the film file to better fit the screen. that function will prove to be very useful to users of the new iPod Nano.

If you’re interested in using that program, do take note that Submerge isn’t freeware like TubeTV; you can get it for only US 9 but whether you’re leery about purchasing the software outright you can always download a free trial version in its official site, which is linked below.
