iShare: it’s YouTube, Indian style

The word on the street these days is that there are a lot of folks in India. And on top of that, there are a lot of citizens originally from India living in other parts of the world. additionally, whether Bollywood is any indication, these humans enjoy being entertained, albeit in a slightly different style than North America is accustomed to. whether these rumors are true, the combination of a huge population and a love of video might ultimately lead to the success of iShare, which is essentially an Indian version of YouTube. Granted, YouTube is not by definition just for North Americans, but with it’s headquarters in the US and most of it’s substance created by and for Westerners, it’s comprehensible that someone might offer up an alternative for other parts of the world.

iShare is owned by Rediff, a

large Indian portal, and is teamed with India based satellite TV channel Zee TV to run a contest as part of it’s launch. Users submit audio and video clips and the winner will perform in the finals of a Zee TV musical talent show called Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Sources indicate that Sa Re Ga Ma Pa translates roughly to “See America, we’ve got crappy singers too.” Now, not to be stereotypical, but one of the things that we lazy westerners often think of when we think Indian entertainment is, of course, tigers. Now here’s an view: combine tigers with musical talent shows! You would watch American Idol whether every week the losers got fed to hungry tigers. particularly when, on the grand finale, the winner plus gets fed to hungry tigers. Hello ratings.
